A well-maintained dental implant can last a lifetime. But for this to happen, rigorous hygiene and regular checkups are essential. At the Longchamp Dental Clinic in Casablanca, we systematically train our patients on how to care for their implants from the moment they are placed.
Brush your implants at least twice a day, morning and evening, with a soft toothbrush or an electric toothbrush. Unlike natural teeth, implants cannot develop cavities, but bacterial plaque can cause peri-implantitis (inflammation of the bone around the implant), which is much more serious.
Pay particular attention to the junction between the implant crown and the gum: this is where bacteria tend to accumulate the most.
Regular dental floss or super-floss (designed for implants) allows you to clean the interdental spaces that a toothbrush cannot reach. Interdental brushes are also very effective and particularly recommended for patients with implant-supported bridges.
An oral irrigator (such as Waterpik) is an excellent addition for implant wearers. It helps remove food debris and gently massages the gums around the implants.
Avoid biting into extremely hard foods directly with the implant. Chew on both sides and cut food if necessary to avoid putting excessive force on the crown.
We recommend a check-up every 6 months at Clinique Dentaire Longchamp. During these visits, our practitioners check osseointegration, monitor crown mobility, perform professional scaling, and detect any early signs of peri-implantitis.
Swollen or painful gums around the implant: consult immediately.
Loose implant: a sign of osseointegration failure – a dental emergency.
Bleeding when brushing: may indicate developing peri-implant gingivitis.
